How effective are the trade embargos against Russia?

“We’re upholding the principle that bigger nations can’t bully the small — by opposing Russian aggression, supporting Ukraine’s democracy and reassuring our Nato allies. Last year, as we were doing the hard work of imposing sanctions along with our allies, some suggested that Putin’s aggression was a masterful display of strategy and strength. Well, today, it is America that stands strong and united with our allies, while Russia is isolated, with its economy in tatters. That’s how America leads — not with bluster, but with persistent, steady resolve.” President Barack Obama

The US has indeed disapproved of the supposed Russian aggression in Ukraine, and loudly enough for everyone to hear and  according to his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama has solved the Russia problem. Yet some how the war in Ukrainian has been since even escalating, even helped by both sides in the conflict..  President Barack Obama’s  statements on the subject of Russia shows he’s either incompetent, ignorant, or really blind to the dangers of the deteriorating relationship between Moscow and the West or merely too quick to take credit for a victory that is not even on the horizon. “We’re upholding the principle that bigger nations can’t bully the small — by opposing Russian aggression, supporting Ukraine’s democracy and reassuring our Nato allies. Well, today, it is America that stands strong and united with our allies, while Russia is isolated, with its economy in tatters. That’s how America leads — not with bluster, but with persistent, steady resolve.” President Barack Obama failed to mention that the Russia trade embargo has hurt severely nations like Canada for a start.

Stephen Harper’s bad policy on Oil and Putin, where he says Russia has failed on many  fronts and has had no positive gains NEEDS A Re Adjustment.  As in his own province things look really bleaker now too. Prime Minister Stephen Harper was openly  punishing Russia but seems to have inflicted more pain on his own people instead.

Canadian exporters now also have also been stung by Russia’s currency crisis and its retaliatory sanctions against the West over the crisis in Ukraine.   Companies from farm-equipment manufacturers to pork producers are affected.  The Russian market bought 563-million dollars worth of Canada’s agricultural exports in 2012 Richard Davies, a vice-president at pork and poultry processor in Caaaanada Olymel,  said the fallout from the Ukraine crisis has had a significant effect. Russia has struck back by slapping a ban on meat, seafood, milk and dairy products, fruit and vegetables from Canada, the U.S., the European Union, and other countries.  The Russian government has also limited subsidies, particularly to its agricultural sector. Instead of buying from Canada they are buying it elsewhere. Even a new French accord was made with Russia to lift its ban on live pig and pork imports.

Greece objects to EU call for more Russia sanctions. “We underline that it does not have our country’s consent.” Alexis Tsipras,  prime minister.  The government of Greece has raised a formal objection to an EU statement released on Tuesday condemning Russia’s alleged involvement in the Ukraine crisis and calling for broader sanctions.  Greece can’t be ignored if it chooses to oppose further EU sanctions against Russia, since any penalties require a unanimous decision from all . Two-way trade between Russia and Greece was worth 7 billion euros ($7.9 billion) in 2013 and a plummeting ruble is likely to prevent many Russians from taking their holidays in Greece, where tourism is the country’s biggest moneymaker.  Mr Tsipras condemned sanctions against Russia, saying that the EU ran the risk of “shooting itself in the foot”.

The volume of Russian tourists travelling to Europe drop by 30 percent – Medvedev – The volume of Russian tourists travelling to Europe dropped by 30 percent and the decrease can be explained by recently strained international relations, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev had said.

CYPRUS is becoming increasingly vocal over its opposition to EU sanctions on Moscow.   Cyprus also  has stated publicly on numerous occasions that it  disagrees with further sanctions on Russia. The move by European Council President to impose fresh EU sanctions on Russia was a “rushed one” and “was lacking any logic”, President of the Cyprus House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has said.

THE OIL PRICE DROP HAS HIT  CANADA  SEVERELY.  The shock – a plunge in oil prices to $50 a barrel, from more than $100 a barrel in June — is causing concern serious  about possible negative impacts on the Canadian economy overall.

After realizing its failure in Ukraine, the West, led by Obama has set out to destroy the Russian economy by lowering gold, oil prices, and accordingly gas prices as they are the main budget sources of export revenue for Russia and also the main sources of replenishment of Russian gold reserves. Right now the West spends much of its efforts and resources to suppress the prices of gold and oil. There is another interesting element in Putin’s game. It’s Russian uranium. Every sixth light bulb in the USA depends on its supply. Which Russia sells to the US too, for dollars. The cat and mouse game power struggle between the two superpowers of USA and Russia with next the significant oil price drop is punishing the USA and Canada as much as it’s punishing Russia.  https://putin1hero.wordpress.com/2015/01/01/putin-the-russian-hero/

In the meantime, Vice-President Joe Biden’s son Hunter has been hired as the top lawyer for Burisma, Ukraine’s biggest independent natural gas producer, which is owned by former ecology minister Mykolai Zlochevsky, whom Ukrainian prosecutors seek for corruption-related crimes. http://gulfnews.com/opinions/columnists/obama-s-bravado-on-russia-has-a-hollow-ring-1.1446582

“Obama’s description of sanctions as “hard work” on the part of the US is laughable. In the first 11 months of 2014, US exports to Russia actually increased to $10.22 billion from $10.18 billion from the same period the previous year. US imports from Russia decreased to $21.97 billion from $25.49 billion, a change of just $3.5 billion. America’s  partners have suffered all the pain. “Whether the sanctions have worked is arguable. And the sanctions have made it all but impossible for Russian entities to borrow in the West, causing Russia’s external debt to shrink to $599.5 billion from $728.9 billion at the beginning of last year. In the medium term, this might just make Russia more resilient to external shocks. The sanctions certainly have not ripped the Russian economy to “tatters.””

” The US president would have done better not to talk about Russia and Ukraine at all.” After all it was another of those too many lies he is well known for..

Bosnian  ministers of trade block a 5 million-euro arms deal with Ukraine . The UNIS-Group was to have exported 300 tons of ammunition to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.  Bosnia’s three-member Presidency is made up of officials from all three main groups living in the country — the Bosniaks, the Croats and the Serbs. Any decision requires approval by all three, which is unlikely since Bosnian Serb member Mladen Ivanic has already said he would not support the export. ”
